Most business decisions start as a question. Which market should we enter? Who are we really up against? What are customers saying? Which vendor should we trust with the budget? The hard part is rarely asking. It's getting an answer you can defend when the money is real. In my latest video, "Perplexity for Business: The AI That Helps Founders Make Better Decisions," I share my honest point of view on why Perplexity has become one of the most useful AI tools for that job, and where it can still steer you wrong.
- Perplexity is built around search and citations, so you can check the sources behind a claim instead of accepting one AI-generated answer
- A citation is not proof: in a March 2025 Tow Center test, even Perplexity, the best of eight tools, got 37% of news-source lookups wrong (Columbia Journalism Review, 2025)
- 66% of AI users rely on AI output without evaluating its accuracy, and 56% report making mistakes at work because of it (KPMG and University of Melbourne, 2025)
- Comet, Perplexity's AI browser, has been free since October 2, 2025, and pauses for your confirmation before sensitive actions like sending emails or placing orders
- Start with one research-heavy workflow and measure whether it produced a better decision, not just more information
Perplexity Is Not Another Chatbot
Perplexity's opportunity for business isn't that it chats. It's that it works as a research, decision-making, and execution layer for founders, operators, consultants, marketers, and teams who have to make better-informed calls. A standard chatbot hands you one polished answer. Perplexity is built around search, research, and citations, so the answer arrives with a trail you can follow.
That trail changes the job. Instead of asking whether you believe the answer, you ask whether the sources support it. You can open them, compare them, and see where two of them disagree. For a founder deciding on a market, a hire, or a vendor, that's the difference between a hunch with good grammar and a decision with evidence behind it.
My view, and the one I keep coming back to in the video, is simple: Perplexity is a research partner, not an automatic source of truth. It finds information faster, surfaces relevant sources, and exposes assumptions you hadn't stated. It doesn't do the last step, which is deciding what the evidence means for your business.
This is the natural next step after the workflow conversation I had about ChatGPT for business. There the question was how to run AI without creating chaos. Here it's how to check what AI tells you before you act on it.
Why Is a Citation Not the Same as Correctness?
KPMG and the University of Melbourne surveyed more than 48,000 people across 47 countries and found that 66% rely on AI output without evaluating its accuracy, and 56% say they've made mistakes in their work because of AI (KPMG, "Trust, attitudes and use of Artificial Intelligence: A global study 2025," May 2025). The habit that causes the damage isn't using AI. It's skipping the check.
Citations help, but they aren't a guarantee. In March 2025, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia tested eight AI search tools with 1,600 queries. Given a direct excerpt from a news article, each tool had to name the headline, publisher, date, and URL. More than 60% of responses were wrong overall. Perplexity did best of the eight and still answered incorrectly 37% of the time (Columbia Journalism Review, "We Compared Eight AI Search Engines. They're All Bad at Citing News," March 6, 2025).
A citation shows where a claim came from. It doesn't guarantee the claim is current, complete, relevant, or correct. So the checklist I use is short: open the sources that matter, check the publication dates, compare conflicting information, understand the original context, validate anything high-consequence, and only then apply your own judgment.
Where Can Founders Use Perplexity?
Perplexity earns its place on five kinds of work, all of them research-heavy and repeated often enough to save real hours. The pattern is the same in each: ask a specific business question, read the cited sources, and note what still needs checking before you act. Here's how the five break down.
| Use | Example Question | Verify Before Acting |
|---|---|---|
| Market intelligence | What changed in this industry in the last 12 months? | Source dates, and whether the data is regional or global |
| Decision preparation | What are the strongest arguments for and against entering this market? | Which assumptions have no evidence behind them |
| Content research | What current, credible data supports this newsletter topic? | The original study, not just the article quoting it |
| Customer and sales intelligence | What does this account do, and what is it likely to need? | Company facts against the company's own site and filings |
| Operational research | How do these three vendors compare on features and reviews? | Pricing and terms directly with each vendor |
Two of these deserve extra attention. Preparing for a sales conversation, an investor meeting, or a strategy session is where the time savings show up fastest, because the alternative is an hour of tabs. And vendor research is where the check matters most, since a wrong comparison becomes a budget commitment.
Notice what's absent from the table: "ask it what to do." Every row is about gathering and weighing evidence. The decision itself stays with you. If you want the deeper reason that inputs matter more than prompts, I covered it in the context engineering breakdown.
What Does Perplexity Comet Change?
On October 2, 2025, Perplexity released its Comet browser to everyone, for free, after a limited launch on July 9 that drew millions of people to the waitlist (Perplexity, "The internet is better on Comet," October 2, 2025). Comet brings the research closer to the work itself, inside the browser where you already spend the day.
There are two parts worth separating. The Comet Assistant helps you read, summarize, and research across your browser context, so a competitor site, a report, and a customer email can sit in one working session. The Comet Agent goes further and supports multi-step tasks: finding calendar-compatible options, scheduling meetings, filling forms, and managing subscriptions.
That second part is where governance starts. Perplexity says Comet pauses for your confirmation on actions that really matter, such as sending emails or messages, modifying your calendar, and placing final shopping orders, and that classifiers check content for hidden malicious instructions before the assistant acts on it (Perplexity Security Team, "Mitigating prompt injection in Comet," October 22, 2025). For teams, Perplexity's Enterprise plans let admins limit what Comet's agent can do, including permitting actions only on approved domains (Perplexity Help Center, "Comet for Enterprise"), and offer audit logs that capture queries, agent steps, and answers (Perplexity Help Center, "Audit Logs").
That's the direction business AI should take: more capability, but not less control. Before you let any AI browser act for you, ask six questions:
- Which websites can it access?
- What customer, company, or internal information can it see?
- What actions can it perform?
- What requires human confirmation?
- Can the business audit what happened?
- What happens if the information is outdated or incomplete?
If you can't answer the fourth and fifth, the agent isn't ready to run unsupervised in your business. I made the same case for another agent in the Claude governance post.
How Does Perplexity Fit Inside the BAE Framework?
I use Build, Amplify, Elevate, the BAE Framework, to keep any AI tool tied to business results instead of novelty. Perplexity maps onto each stage differently, and the value compounds when you use it deliberately at all three.
Build: sharpen market and competitive understanding
Use Perplexity to gather evidence, map competitors, and prepare decisions. Ask it to compare options, state its assumptions, and flag gaps in the evidence. The output is a stronger starting point, and your team's job is to test it.
Amplify: strengthen your content and authority
Current information and credible sources make newsletters, sales material, and thought leadership more trustworthy. Pull fresh data, then trace each figure to its original source before you publish it under your name. Your authority is your judgment, so unverified numbers spend it for nothing.
Elevate: spend your time where only you can
The point is to reduce the hours lost to collecting tabs, searching, and organizing raw research. That frees time for strategy, relationships, capital allocation, and higher-value opportunities. If your calendar looks the same a month after adopting Perplexity, you added a tool without changing the job.
Should You Use Free, Pro, or Max?
Perplexity offers Free, Pro, and Max plans for individuals, plus Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max for organizations (Perplexity Help Center, "Which Perplexity subscription plan is right for you?"). The tiers scale with how heavy your research is, and pricing changes, so check the current numbers on Perplexity's site before you decide.
| Plan | Best For | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Casual exploration and testing one workflow | Cited answers with basic query handling |
| Pro | Regular market research and analysis | Advanced models, longer memory, document creation, broader connectors |
| Max | Intensive research and workflow automation | Expert-level research capacity for heavy daily use |
| Enterprise | Teams that need governance | Admin controls over agent actions, plus audit logs |
My advice is to earn the upgrade. Run one real workflow on the free plan, note where it hits limits, and pay for a higher tier only when the limit costs you more than the subscription. Buying Max before you've defined a workflow is the same mistake as buying an agent before you've defined a process.
How Do You Start With One Workflow?
Start with a single research-heavy workflow. Not five, and not the whole company. Pick something you already do and want to do better:
- Research three competitors before a pricing review
- Prepare for a major meeting or investor conversation
- Evaluate a new market before committing budget
- Build a source-backed content brief
- Compare vendors before signing
Then measure the right thing. Ask whether Perplexity helped you make a better decision, not whether it handed you more information. Track what it got right, what you had to correct, and how much time the research took compared with before. More research isn't the goal. Better business judgment is.
That measurement is the part most people skip, and it's the reason so many AI pilots stall. If you can't say what decision improved, you're collecting output, not value.
If you'd like to try it, you can use my Perplexity link. Disclosure: using it may support the channel at no additional cost to you, and my recommendation above doesn't depend on it.

What is Perplexity used for in business?
Founders and teams use Perplexity for research-heavy work: market intelligence, decision preparation, content research, customer and sales intelligence, and operational research such as vendor and tool comparisons. Its answers come with citations, so you can open the sources behind a claim instead of trusting one unsupported answer.
Is Perplexity accurate enough to base business decisions on?
Treat it as a fast starting point, not a source of truth. In a March 2025 Tow Center test of eight AI search tools, Perplexity was the best performer and still answered 37% of news-source lookups incorrectly (Columbia Journalism Review, March 2025). Open the important sources, check dates, and verify before any high-stakes decision.
What is the Perplexity Comet browser, and is it free?
Comet is Perplexity's AI-powered browser. Perplexity released it to everyone for free on October 2, 2025, after a limited launch on July 9 (Perplexity, October 2025). The Comet Assistant helps you read, summarize, and research across your browsing context, and the Comet Agent can carry out multi-step tasks.
Do I need Perplexity Pro or Max for business use?
Not to start. Perplexity offers Free, Pro, Max, and Enterprise tiers (Perplexity Help Center, 2026). Test one research workflow on the free plan first. Move to a paid tier when the work needs heavier research, longer projects, or connectors, and choose an Enterprise plan when a team needs admin controls and audit logs.
What should a business ask before letting an AI browser act on its behalf?
Ask which sites it can access, what customer or company data it can see, what actions it can take, what needs human confirmation, and whether you can audit what happened. Comet pauses for confirmation on actions like sending emails, changing calendars, and placing final orders (Perplexity Security Team, October 2025).
Perplexity is a strong middle ground between raw information and automated insight. It shortens the distance from a business question to evidence, and Comet extends that into execution. But it works best as a partner for your judgment, never a substitute for it. Check the sources, keep the confirmations on, and measure whether your decisions got better.
